the sock that never ends (and a confession)

i spent the better part of yesterday afternoon working on my first jaywalker as i watched the UCLA vs ND game on television. for some reason, this sock is killing me. i started sometime in early spring and then barely touched it until a few days ago. i'm determined to finish these (yes, i'm only on the first one) and get on with a new pair of socks (maybe these -- again, i'm the last one on the bandwagon). anyway, despite my best efforts, i only managed to get a few repeats done on the foot (about another inch before i'm ready for the toe). and then i got distracted by the football game. yes, you read that right, i was watching football.

anyone who knows me is aware of my affection for certain sports. when i was younger i used to watch hockey (the bruins), baseball (the blue jays), and basketball (the celtics) quite a bit. i even was up for a tennis or soccer match. but i never got into football. i just didn't see the appeal. when we landed here, i was almost determined to completely avoid football despite its pervasiveness. and then i watched a game. that first game involved me asking a lot of stupid questions (although i still want to know what the highest score of a game ever was). and then i watched the next game. i'm reluctantly hooked. i still have very mixed feelings about the culture surrounding the game and i don't think i could ever get into pro football, but at least at the college level the game is compelling and requires an impressive amount of athleticism. and, after yesterday's game, i can't help it: i heart brady quinn.

Maybe you could knit him something for his 22nd (22 in big font) birthday, which is fast approaching. Football? Megster what have they done to you? I'm coming to get you.
