farm fresh
Much of the time, I miss city life and all that goes with it. Every so often, though, I'm reminded that there are benefits to living in a more rural area. Late summer at the Farmers Market is one of those benefits. Markets in cities are great, but even then the produce has to travel a little way. Here, more often than not the fruits and veggies are from ten minutes away. And the food tastes like food (ETA: Not that the food from markets in the city doesn't taste like food. What I meant was that local produce, wherever it may be from, tastes so much better than something that's been trucked across thousands of kilometres).
I'm also reminded of how short the seasons are for certain fruits and vegetables. Strawberry season was blink and you'll miss it and was shortened by the extremely hot weather we were having in mid-July. Now that it's been raining and cool for weeks, many crops are threatened for different reasons. I was glad, though, to be able to pick up some potatoes and carrots from one of the organic farmers.
But what I'm really excited about is the blueberries I picked up (just a pint -- I had to refrain from a getting a large box because I didn't think I could carry it all the way home).
I'm also very happy to say that I think and hope I've finally kicked the horrible flu/cold and that today marks the first day of a week's vacation so hopefully I'll be back soon and with more time to take photos and knit.
